Godly goals must be bathed in prayer. (Matt 6:33) “Seek first the kingdom of God and all these other things will be added to you.” Take time to pray about your goals regularly. This will reinforce them and cause you to remain focused. Some more benefits of goals.

Benefits of setting goals #1

Setting and achieving goals is a matter of time management. We all have the same amount of time. The difference is in how we use our time. Bad patterns of time use are easy to fall into and difficult to change. Understanding your purpose and goals is a great motivator in using your time wisely.

Experts suggest the painful task of keeping up with every minute of your time for a couple weeks. This is a very revealing exercise. Through time management we can gain an hour or two (for some more) every week. This can add up to days and weeks over a long period of time. Using time properly actually allows us more time to spend on the things we enjoy.

We have been doing some construction at the church and we have a blueprint to follow. The blueprint is our guide to reach our desired outcome. Goals are the blueprint for designing the life God desire for you. Understanding your purpose and values allows Godly goals that enable living the life God has planned for you.

By thinking about your values and purpose it should bring clarity to goal setting. The church culture of my past did not emphasize setting Godly goals. Almost the opposite has been my experience. It seemed the church took the approach that you were unspiritual or too self focused by setting goals, just trust God to do what He wants. The outcome was people wondering apathetically without direction. The old saying, “If you aim at nothing you will hit it every time” is true. Setting Godly goals is a great tool that leads to LIFE CHANGE.

Take time to write down your values, purpose and goals. “The discipline of writing something down is the first step toward making it happen.” (Lee Iacocca) “If you don’t set goals for yourself, you are doomed to work to achieve the goals of someone else.” (Brian Tracy) When you commit your goals to paper they move from abstract dreams and wishes to reality demanding attention and action. Take time NOW to write out your goals based upon your values and purpose.

I just finished writing my professional purpose statement. My purpose is: “To create a culture of HOPE; that attracts, disciples (reach and teach), pastors (care & feed), challenges, motivates and trains people in the advancement of the Kingdom resulting in new churches, regionally, nationally and globally through riverwoods church.

Starting Off Right

Upcoming blogs will focus on Goal setting and time management. My prayer is that you find these inspirational and practical.

The beginning of a new year is a natural time to reflect on the past year and evaluate if you lived your values, accomplished your goals, and to refocus for the upcoming year. God intends us to live intentionally, not accidentally. Preparation for the upcoming year is essential to have a life that counts, makes a difference in your own world and the Kingdom of God. The exercise of reflecting and refocus at times is difficult and painful when facing failures, missed opportunities, changes in relationships and your own weakness; however, great joy comes when you realize some things you did right, see what God accomplished through you, realize new relationships, have the wonderful prospect of learning from the past and the hope that comes with a fresh start in the new year.

The faith exercise of setting goals and re-aligning values should be a highlight of every New Year. Do you know your values and purpose in life? To keep from drifting through life without a real sense of significance, feeling like a number on planet earth, find your values and purpose. Start of by determining your top 5 values and understanding your purpose in life. My goals are wrapped up in my values and purpose. The five F’s of my goal setting this year are.

Yours are probably different than mine because they are based on your values and purpose. I have a couple of new values this year that have led to new goal areas. The biggest change or new goal for me as 2012 lies ahead is the area of fitness. (1 Tim 4:8 KJV) “Bodily exercise profits little.” Probably not the best translation to understand that exercise is beneficial. Many use this to rail against exercise, which is not the verses intent. A better translation is (1 Tim 4:8 NIV) “For physical training is of some value.” Paul is not saying exercise has no value, just the opposite, it has some value. For me exercise and weight control are big goals this year. Anyone who knows me realizes this is a huge undertaking. In fact, I have never added this to my written goals. I love to eat, but the possible health implications of being overweight and lack of physical activity has disturbed my mind and convicted my heart to the point I cannot let this slip anymore. As I weighed this morning it was my lowest in several years, down 40lbs from my highest weight. The New Year and new goals bring challenges but many rewards. Hopefully, the New Year brings excitement at the prospect of starting off right. To be continued…





Finding your way in a modern day, (Top Ten suggestions to follow for rewarding social media experiences from a biblical perspective)

I have been relatively quiet for some time in regards to blogging, social media, texting and other modern forms of communication. During this time of quietness I have discovered a few things about our modern techno society and its social media use. Primarily we need classes on proper etiquette and social media ethics for today’s user. This has been on my heart very much as I have watched supposedly mature believer’s misuse social media. I am not against these modern ways of interacting and communicating. I participate and even encourage regular use. However, observations of improper use have led to the writing of a social media policy for the staff and leaders of riverwoods church (of which is my privilege to pastor). Believer’s, must realize that we are part of something larger than ourselves, (our local churches) and the larger body of Christ. There seems to be a disconnection between believer’s and being biblically responsible when using social media. When we are careless, and out from under the control of Christ and scriptures basic teachings on interaction with other believers and society, these avenues can cause a great deal of harm. Due to this, other dangers and improper uses, some are vehemently opposed to any modern vehicles of social interaction, stating they are only evil or bad and only lead to trouble. Just like any other tool they are amoral neither good or bad inherently within themselves. Just like guns or money it is the user that makes some things good or bad. By following a few simple guidelines and common sense social media can be a fantastic tool for good; such as, reconnecting with old friends, the ability to communicate needs and causes and the wonderful opportunity to get the word out about events, etc. Prayerfully consider my Top Ten suggestions to follow when it comes to social media.

10. Don’t air your dirty laundry. Please be careful to keep personal stuff personal. During difficulties you will be tempted to post something for everyone to see, looking for support in your distress, but, don’t do it. Contact someone privately or just post a simple message asking for prayer without going into details and naming names.

9. Never go for retaliation and vengeance against an individual or institution for others to see. Remember, you never look good when making someone else look bad.

8. Use caution when saying things from the safety of your home, office or cell phone that you would never be brave enough to say in an eye to eye public venue or face to face. This is a cowards’ way of doing things, not the actions of a mature follower of Christ.

7. Don’t write on someone’s public wall and ask them to message you privately. Everyone knows you just want to be seen doing this. Just go ahead and message them privately rather than trying to throw a stone and hide your hand with a subliminal message.

6. Stay away from personal agendas. I have watched great detriment to people as; personal axes have been ground, clandestine messages of personal attack, and unbiblical proselytizing of disgruntled church goers has taken place. I’m sure you have noticed when some people get upset with their church or pastor and others find out, they start blowing up their page. This is due to personal agendas rather than general interest in the people. If you’re the one being blown up with the messages don’t be naive enough to think you’re now the best thing in their life; because, they are not that interested, you’re just a tool to publicly display their un-forgiveness and hatred of someone else or their former church. The proper biblical thing is to encourage people to stay and work through issues becoming mature followers of Christ learning to work through disagreements rather than run.

5. Self promotion should be avoided at all cost. I am not talking about a business, church, products, teaching or information being promoted; never quit speaking up for good things. I mean just plain old self promotion. When you read some people’s post and it comes across that they think they are the best or the “only one” who could do something & their ability or their way is superior to others, stay away! In recent time, I have been sickened while watching self promotion and the gullibleness of others falling into the trap of stroking self-egotistic maniacs that only use people to meet their own need of approval and acceptance due to low self esteem. This goes two ways. 1. Don’t be a self-promoter, let God raise you up. 2. Don’t fall into the trap of a self promoter, they are only interested in themselves and they will use you; for approval, finances, to support their agenda, turn your back on long standing relationships with questions and criticisms (because they are jealous) looking to be #1. Please remember Jesus is # 1. Guess this comes from the pastor in me to protect people.

4. Don’t use it as a tool of acceptance and approval to stroke your own ego or pride. Two ways we do this, are, by liking everything other people post, and watching to see who likes what you have posted. If you like everything people post then you don’t really like anything, and if someone likes everything you post then they really don’t like anything. Sound a little confusing? Let me explain. Discretion about the post is not being used when someone likes everything, and without discretion how can they know if they really like something or not. Real cognitive thoughts about the post are not being applied, they are just hitting like, trying to be seen or looking for acceptance or approval. Acceptance, approval and recognition, are real basic needs but using social media to meet them creates a false and shallow sense of being loved.

3. Don’t be negative – Think before writing something you may regret later. It’s hard to take it back once it is in print. Don’t use it to say something to or about someone or something that you are to cowardly to speak to them personally.

2. Understand that a contact by social media avenues is not the same as a visit or a call. Be careful of using social media as a convenience, rather than doing the more thoughtful, meaningful, time consuming and difficult task of true personal interaction.

1. Use social media venues as a positive tool to connect, encourage, support and promote one another and the cause of Christ.

Bonus: For the professional that wants to be heard with credibility, realize that posting too much will cause you to lose a long lasting and far reaching voice of impact. People will eventually become numb and disinterested. Follow a few professionals that are successful in their field with a great social media following and take note of a few things. Notice they don’t fill their idle time with continual posting of one thing after the other (they’re too busy), they post meaningful info (not just ramblings) and you get the idea they are more of a listener than a talker; therefore, when they speak others listen (because they have something worth listening too).

I have been guilty of breaking many if not all of the above suggestions, but through quietness and reflection I am learning to be a leader in; “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” (Phil 4:8)





Creative Evangelism

Our culture has changed dramatically in the last generation. As a young preacher I heard stories that men of God would go door to door down a street in their city, and 10, 20 or maybe even 50 people would pray to receive Christ. Oh, how wonderful it would be to have experienced that kind of openness to the gospel. Even, 26 years ago when I started in the ministry, you could still do door to door evangelism. Myself, and others would knock on 100 doors a day meeting people and sharing the gospel when possible. Today people don’t want to be bothered by strangers (nor do I), they won’t even open the door or they live in gated communities. Today’s culture poses new challenges to spreading of the gospel. In order to penetrate today’s lostness riverwoods adopted an additional strategy “Creative Evangelism”.

I have adopted the mind-set, “Do whatever it takes to get the word of God to people”. The scriptures say (Matt 10:16) “Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So, be shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.” At riverwoods church we are serious about getting the gospel to people. In fact we are using creative ways to get them to come to us. In the last two months we have seen over 70 public decisions regarding Christ. The great thing is that almost all of these people making decisions have no church context.

In July we sponsored a FREE Bass Tournament. We gave away $9,000 in prize money and the fishermen didn’t have to pay an entry fee. This year we had our largest attendance to date, 195 boats, which means almost 400 fishermen, plus families. We did require them to attend a pre-tournament meeting which was held on Friday night before the tournament on Saturday. During the pre-tournament meeting we fed the fishermen a simple meal, had a worship service where the gospel was presented, and held a tournament rules meeting. During the service 56 men publicly made a decision for Christ. The next day we held the tournament and it was a great time. Many of the fishermen say it is the best tournament they fish. We have even been contacted about other decisions since the tournament, isn’t it wonderful how the word continues to bear fruit. This year before the meeting we held, campone17, a youth camp about becoming fishers of men based on Jesus’ word in (Mark1:17) “…follow me & I will make you fishers of men.” A sister church, GCC of Olive Branch, MS brought their youth to the camp and then on Friday and Saturday helped us with the tournament.

In August, riverwoods Eddyville hosted a mud truck drag race event much like the free bass tournament, where the competitors get to race for free and received the largest prize money of the year. Just for your information the racers are a little tougher and rougher than the fishing crowd. During the worship service we had people mocking and jeering our worship team. I simply confronted this behavior and let them know that if they raced, they had to sit down, be respectful and remain throughout the meeting. Men started taking their hats off, some worshiped, some didn’t, but they all paid close attention while I preached the gospel. Attendance was just a little over 100 and 14 people prayed to receive Christ. Some of our people were a little scared when I confronted the improper behavior, but I told them; ‘Sometimes you just have to get in the fire and snatch them out’.

Reaching people with the gospel takes a lot of work and costs a lot of money, but, the rewards are worth the effort. I love reaching people with the gospel even if it means I have to do “Creative Evangelism”.





Discernment and Divine Opportunities

After talking with a friend today it became a reality that we need to be careful how we invest our time. This friend has been very involved for years in something he enjoys, is passionate about and given up a lot of time to participate in. In our conversations he has communicated a desire to use this activity to touch people with the gospel. We have a joint venture together this year around this activity, for the purpose that others will hear the gospel. This event is a litmus test for his future involvement with this activity. Simply stated; he wants to make sure he spends his time making a difference for the kingdom of God. If he does not see the movement of God in people he plans on finding more productive soil in which to spend time and plant seed.

We can find a lot of places to spend our time, but the secret is having discernment about maximizing our time. The problem in our culture is not finding somewhere to volunteer, serve or get involved. The issue is discerning the best places to get involved. The busier life gets it becomes more important it to say yes to the right things and most important understanding which opportunities where we must say, NO! Opportunities abound! Many of them are good and worthy of support. When it comes to giving our time we need a clear discernment from God to determine the best over the good. Understanding your purpose will help you to determine where to spend your time.

I believe the first consideration when looking for a place to invest your time is the local church. God instituted the church, it is not a man made organization but a God made organism for reaching, making and maturing believers. Scripture says “Jesus loved the church and gave himself for it.” Don’t try to convince others or yourself about your commitment to, love for, or devotion and inspiration concerning Christ if you are not fully invested in a local church. This is the tool God has created to expand His kingdom.

So, as you’re considering options to invest your time, please seek the Holy Spirit for discernment and divine opportunities.
